Skeem Saam actor Mortimer Williams was among those shot during the Melville New Year's massacre

- Occupants in a black SUV drove past Poppy's restaurant in Melville and sprayed bullets at patrons who were outside

- Two women died and several people were injured as a result of the incident

Skeem Saam and Erfsondes actor Mortimer Williams was among those shot during a New Year's Eve shooting nightmare in Melville, Johannesburg.

Mortimer told SowetanLIVE that he is grateful to be alive after the terrifying incident.

Two women died at the scene and several others are being treated for injuries in various hospitals.

Apparently there was a small verbal altercation at the outside tables of Poppy's Restaurant involving two groups of patrons.

One group left the scene and returned a while later, driving by in a black SUV.

They brandished guns and shot several rounds at the people seated outside the restaurant.

Mortimer said, “We did the countdown and everything seemed fine. We didn't know of any altercations between anyone.

"I saw a friend who I hadn't wished a happy new year yet and when I went outside to do so, I heard this noise. It sounded like (fire) crackers going off but then I felt the effect and realised I had been shot.”

Mortimer said emergency personnel arrived pretty quickly and rushed the injured parties to the ER of a local hospital.

He said, “A bullet missed my left kidney by a few millimetres and went through the top of my pelvis. It didn't shatter it but left a hole."

"Luckily, they didn't have to operate on it, but I have been given medication and am being treated.”

Two women, aged between 30 and 40, tragically died at the scene.

Two cases of murder and six of attempted murder cases are being investigated by police but no arrests have been made yet.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
